Greater Testing Concepts

The Mandelbrot Competition, now in its twenty-sixth year, is an excellent mathematical resource for students and teachers alike. We believe that problem solving is one of the most effective means for exploring the world of mathematics, and that contests provide an exciting and motivational setting in which to do so.

Traditionally we have offered two contests at the high school level. The first is the Mandelbrot Competition, which adheres to a short answer format and takes place in five rounds spread throughout the school year. The range of topics and contest levels is designed to engage students with only a modest background while still stretching the most advanced students. The second is the Mandelbrot Team Play, emphasizing mathematical writing skills and effective group work. This contest is typically held in three rounds during the winter months to help experienced students prepare for events such as the USAMO. (The Team Play is not currently being offered.)

For a further description of the contests and an overview of the web site, please visit the Introduction page. A schedule for the year appears on the Information page, while answers to all of your questions can be found at the FAQ page. Sample tests and other preparation materials are available at the Resources page.

8/29/18 The competition will commence next week, so registration for the current year has now closed. Good luck to all participants on the round one questions!
7/26/18 Registration for the 2018-19 Mandelbrot Competition will begin in mid August. Schools that have participated in the past will receive an email invitation and can sign up via their existing accounts; new schools should visit the Register page via the link at left.
